For my boy who is highly sensitive

It’s not because of who you are that people will leave you out, it’s because of who you are that you will let people in.

It’s not because of who you are that things seem so much bigger, it’s because of who you are that things are focused on, understood, broken down, cared about.

It’s not because of who you are that people may turn away, it’s because of who are that the right people will stay, a safe place, a loyalty, a home-like feeling.

It’s not because of who you are that people will judge you, it’s because of who you are that people may forget to look inward. Because your heart is on your sleeve, it’s loud sometimes I know. Your sensitive nature is to be protected, and I swear you’ve been here before.

It’s not because of who you are that things seem more painful, they are painful. It’s because of who you are that a light shines on them. It’s heavy catching things others miss.

Heavy and beautiful.

What a blessing it is that you are you.

What a blessing and responsibility I have to guide you.

And I’m not challenged because of who you are, I’m challenged because of these growing pains, the triggers I face, the mirrors you hold up. Challenges I needed, I’m growing so much because of you.

It is because of who you are that you will thrive,

and so will I.
